The last time I was up in Beacon was back in September 2022 and on that trip, Jason and I paid a visit to Glazed Over Donuts. We had also intended to visit Peaceful Provisions, but they had closed for a week to give the staff a vacation. The iconic vegan shop has made a name for itself as a prime destination in the Hudson Valley and for years, it had been on my list to check out. Lucky for me, I was able to make a trip up to Beacon just after July 4 and finally got to try these incredible treats.
Getting an assortment of a half a dozen donuts featuring the flavors Mixed Berry Pistachio, Maple Pecan, German Chocolate old-fashioned, Peach Guava, Pink Strawberry Lemonade, and Blueberry Cinnamon Crumb was clearly the way to go and splitting them all with a group of four made it so we all got to try plenty of each. Peaceful’s yeast-style donuts are light and fluffy, like bitting into tiny soft clouds of airy delight and the flavors are magical, packing a perfect punch of sweetness that never overpowers, matching the crisp and delicate textures of the frosting’s foundation.
The pecans were soft and fresh, not over dried, and the crumbs and pistachios also added excellent crunch to the flaky dough. Despite the size of each treat, the featherweight consistency made them go down easy and never bogged down the stomach and over all, the fruity flavors were bright on the palette, making for a delicious summer snack. That being said, the German Chocolate old-fashioned was a rich, dense, cake donut that was loaded with gooey goodness. As intense as it was, it showcased their range and ability to demonstrate their skills in both forms.
Jason visited Peaceful Provisions in the very early days of the pandemic and I’m happy to report back on them years later to find them thriving and living up to their reputation. There are a few staples that appear on their weekly menus, but the rest is ever-changing which makes me want to return quite soon to see what else they’ll churn out with such success. An all vegan establishment also makes this a more inclusive place to visit and you’d be hard-pressed to actually notice a difference. Peaceful holds their own as one of the best in the state worthy of its destination location outside of the city.
